I have never found myself able to say goodbye, John. You were my friend
when no one else cared. Your music gave me hope when I felt there was
none. You showed me the beauty in life and living, in nature, and the
need to preserve our earth for the future, for our children, and our childrens
children.. You are everything to me, therefore I CANNOT say goodbye. I
can only say thank you for all you have given me, and all you continue
to give me, through my memories of you and the beautiful music you left.
I will only say "Keep my seat up there next to you, when I get there we
will make music together, we will sing of the things that are so important
to both of us" Surgeries have taken my ability to play the guitar, that
I only learned because of you, my first song was "This old guitar". In
heaven, I will have full use back, and we will play! I love you my beloved
friend! Thank You!

This
past summer I was blessed to go to Grand Teton National Park and Moose,
Wyoming to meet Mardy Murie about her 101st birthdate. I know she was
an inspiration to John, and John an inspiration to her. As I do work
at the Murie Ranch and Teton Science School next summer, I will think
of where Mardy and John walked, and where John sang Mardy's song; "Song
for All Lovers" to her for the film about her life, "Arctic Dance", just
a few days before starting his work on his last film for Nature, "Let
This Be a Voice", which was completed just days before his passing. Now
Mardy is gone, but her work, as well as John's work, seen evident at the
Windstar Foundation, where I was also priviledged to go and do some work
this past fall. lives on in those who choose to carry on.

John, The gift you were and always will be. Missing you, Carol. Someday
I will finally get to Windstar and see the above inscription on my brick
on the walking path to your statue, Spirit. May your spirit fly free
in the mountains that you loved. Peace, my friend.
